FAISHION TREAND: Layered haircuts for women that work for every hair type

A shaggy wolf cut works particularly well for those who want more texture and movement. It combines shorter, voluminous layers around the crown with face-framing pieces and longer, tapered lengths at the back. The amount of layering can be adjusted for both fine and thick hair depending on the desired volume and shape.

Layered haircuts for women that work for every hair type

Cracking the code to a haircut that's actually customised for you

POOJA SHARMA/DAILY INDIATIMES

Layered haircuts have given us some of the most recognisable hairstyles over the years. From the butterfly cut to the shaggy wolf cut and even curtain bangs acting as micro layers, they can add volume, movement and shape while enhancing the hair's natural texture. But a good layered haircut is about understanding what your hair needs and cutting it accordingly. For thick hair, that could mean taking away excess weight, while for fine hair, it could mean creating the illusion of volume without compromising density.

Your hair texture should dictate the haircut; your face shape should refine it," shares Sumit Irani, managing director and creative head at Geetanjali Salons. So, to understand how to find the right layered haircut for you, I asked experts about the styles that work for different face shapes and hair types, how to customise them and what to actually ask for beyond bringing in a reference photo.

Why go for a layered haircut

Layers can make the hair look more voluminous and create movement throughout the lengths. When all your hair is cut at one length, it can fall flat. "Layers remove unwanted weight, create lift and give the hair space to move. But it's important to know where and how much to remove based on the hair's density, texture and shrinkage," shares Vijai Vadivu Rangasamy, co-founder and CEO of The Curl Nation, textured hair stylist and haircare formulator.

The key is not simply adding more layers but knowing where they should sit and how much weight needs to be removed. The right placement can make the hair feel lighter while giving it shape and movement

Layered haircuts based on face shape

Rohan Kapse, creative director at LOOKS Salon, shares that, "An oval face shape is considered the ideal face shape for a layered haircut, but every face shape is unique and hair can be cut and styled to enhance the looks."

For a round face, square layers can help create definition, while round layers can soften and open up a petite face. The length of the shortest and longest layers also helps define the overall shape of the haircut.

Layer placement can also depend on individual facial features. Soft bangs can create a youthful effect, while a straight fringe can give the look a sharper finish. Details such as the forehead, cheekbones and jawline are taken into consideration when creating the right face-framing layers.

Different layered haircuts and which one should you go for

There are long layers, face-framing layers, shorter layers, internal layers and more textured cuts such as shags. But not every trend works for everyone. The right style depends on your hair texture, density, length and lifestyle, including how you wear your hair on a daily basis.

If you don't want hair falling onto your face, long face-framing layers can be pulled back into a bun or ponytail. If you want to maintain length while adding volume, soft long layers at the back combined with shorter face-framing pieces and shorter layers around the crown can work well, suggests Rangaswamy. For a low maintenance haircut, shorter lengths with fewer layers can make the hair easier to manage.

Ultimately, a good layered haircut should make the hair feel easier to style and bring out its natural shape rather than require extensive styling to look good.

Layered haircuts for women based on hair texture

Fine hair generally benefits from longer, softer layers that preserve density. "For finer and low-density hair, I would keep some weight at the ends so they still look fuller, while adding lighter layers around the crown to add volume," says Rangaswamy. "Think of it as creating space for the hair to lift and move rather than simply cutting more layers." Face-framing layers can also work well, while keeping the layers through the back and lengths longer to maintain fullness.

Thick hair can take more movement and internal layering. "Layers can create movement and fullness in the hair but at the same time they can also eliminate excess weight," explains Kapse. So, he recommends techniques such as point cutting and thinning shears to soften the layers and create a more blended finish.

Medium hair allows more flexibility with layering. You can play with the amount of layering to create the desired shape, volume and bounce.

Irani explains a simple rule he tells everyone to follow: bring the reference, but let your stylist translate it. The best haircut is never copied. It is customised.

Straight hair

Layers should always work with the hair's natural behaviour. With straight hair, it's easier to see exactly where each layer falls while cutting, which allows for more defined layers. The key is to create enough movement without removing too much weight, particularly through the ends.

Wavy hair

As a dry-cut specialist, Rangaswamy shares that wavy hair can look voluminous while it's being cut and is dry, but the layers can become less visible once the hair is styled. This is because the waves can fall with gravity and lose some of their shape. For wavy hair, more definitive layers and shorter lengths towards the crown can help maintain visible movement and volume.

Curly hair

For curls, the cut needs to follow the hair's natural movement rather than fight it. Blended layers can be created with varying levels of elevation depending on how much volume one wants.

"For a curly hair client that wants to maintain length but have a rounded shape, I add soft layers at the bottom and gradually reduce length at the crown. This balances length and volume," says Rangaswamy.

Coily hair

With coily hair, the challenge is often maintaining its natural volume while creating a balanced shape. Small, careful trims can help preserve the hair's natural volume and structure. Rangaswamy cuts coily hair dry, after it has been washed, styled and completely dried, so he can see its natural shape and work accordingl

The easiest way to style a layered haircut at home

Layered hair is meant to move, not look over-styled. The easiest trick is to work with that movement," explains Irani. Start with a heat protectant, then blow-dry with a round brush or blow-dry brush, lifting the roots and bending the ends away from the face. A large-barrel iron can add soft, undone waves where needed. Finish with a lightweight texturising spray for movement or a serum for shine.

When it comes to the face, think about where you want the movement to begin. Cheekbones, jawline or below the chin can each create a different effect. "Don't curl every layer. A little imperfection is what makes layered hair look modern," he adds.

Common mistakes to avoid when getting a layered haircut

The biggest mistake is falling in love with the haircut before considering what will actually work for your hair," says Irani.

Over layering fine hair can make it look thinner, while very short crown layers can create excessive volume. Thick hair, on the other hand, often benefits from strategic layering that removes weight without compromising its shape.

There is no universally bad layer. The wrong layer is simply one that does not take your hair's texture, density, length and natural movement into account.

The best layered haircuts for women and how to achieve them:

Butterfly cut

One of the most popular layered cuts in recent years, the butterfly cut is defined by short, feathered face-framing layers while keeping the length and density through the back. It can be customised to suit your hair's natural texture and the amount of volume you want.

Long natural layers

If you have long hair and want an easy, low-maintenance style, long natural layers can add movement without taking away too much length. The layers follow the hair's natural texture and create softness through the lengths.

Wavy lob with layers

A layered wavy lob is created by cutting the hair at specific elevations and angles to enhance its natural texture. It works particularly well for shorter hair, adding volume and movement while allowing the waves to form their natural shape.

Straight minimally layered haircut

For straight hair, whether fine or thick, a layered cut can add movement while maintaining length. Face-framing layers can create shape around the face, while carefully placed layers through the lengths can add dimension without making the ends look sparse.

Curly layered haircut

For curly hair, soft layers and face-framing pieces can give the curls a fuller, more rounded shape while maintaining their natural weight. The amount and placement of the layers can be customised depending on how much volume and length you want to retain.

Shaggy wolf cutA shaggy wolf cut works particularly well for those who want more texture and movement. It combines shorter, voluminous layers around the crown with face-framing pieces and longer, tapered lengths at the back. The amount of layering can be adjusted for both fine and thick hair depending on the desired volume and shape.
